Peter Aland at ESD

Opening Tuesday 26 February, 6:00 - 8:00pm

If we put aside for a moment our hopes and fears, and allow our environment, internal and external to snap shot in our minds not a stagnant photograph of the individuals, strangers and familial people who pass by daily but a story that begins to unfold. Without following the story yet knowing it is playing out in our minds and dreams, conscious and uncouscious the virgin canvas becomes the untold story, half remembered, not forgotten.

The Automatic Response Technique is the play and twist of the arm in response to the releasing of the stored stories, each individual person unique, mine just happens to be a small arc with a twisty spin of the brush followed by a flat dab while counting 3s, 5s, and 2s. Quite a mundane and repetitive process really but I love the melody and colour the paints and brush strokes provide. I do have hopes that painting and creating images has a higher purpose, I believe aspirations come true as I paint. Aspirations are never owned by one individual in the same way as an images meaning is never owned by the practitioner or viewer. Both become shared experiences. If a painting means nothing to the viewer it could very well be opening up more of its story than if the painting was immediately liked or disliked.

On the other hand if you like a painting for no other reason than its colour is your favourite or it matches your curtains feel free to consult me in regards to the other paintings you will need to add as contrasts to the room.
